San Felipe was one of Spain's most beautiful 3 mast galleons built in 1690. It had a displacement of over 1000 tons. It was characterized by beautiful ornamentation. She was the flagship of the Spanish Armada. Its powerful armament with 96 cannons located in three rows meant that it could boldly compete with the largest British or English ships. Its main task was to protect shipping routes, transported treasures, and trade goods.
In 1705 during the War of the Spanish Succession, San Felipe participated in a naval battle between 12 Spanish and 35 English ships. After a 24-hour battle, it was badly damaged and sank with tons of gold on board. 9 English and 4 Spanish ships sank in that battle.
